Robert Macfarlane
Writer & Academic
Robert Macfarlane is a British writer on landscape, language and the relationship between them, and a fellow of Emmanuel College, Cambridge. Underland went beneath the surface, from burial chambers to nuclear waste stores, and Landmarks gathered the local words for terrain that English is losing. He writes as a walker first, and his recurring argument is that when we stop naming a place precisely we stop being able to see it.
