Arctic Dreams

Imagination and Desire in a Northern Landscape

Barry Lopez · 1986

Five years in the Canadian Arctic, told as natural history, anthropology and an argument about how landscape shapes the mind that observes it.

Barry Lopez spent five years travelling in the Canadian Arctic, and the book that came out of it moves between the migration of narwhals, the archaeology of the tundra, the history of European exploration and the quality of northern light. It is natural history written as prose-poetry, and it argues throughout that landscapes shape the minds that try to describe them.
