Nan Shepherd wrote this account of the Cairngorms during the 1940s, was talked out of publishing it, and left the manuscript in a drawer for some thirty years. Organised by terrain rather than by journey, it treats the mountain as somewhere you walk into rather than up, and argues that touch, cold and motion are as much a part of thinking as the brain is.
