Blood Meridian
Or the Evening Redness in the West
A scalp-hunting gang crosses the 1850s borderlands, and the desert regards the violence with exactly the same attention it gives a rock.
A boy known only as the kid falls in with the Glanton gang, scalp hunters paid by Mexican authorities to kill Apaches in the borderlands of the 1850s. Presiding over them is Judge Holden, learned and enormous and entirely without conscience. McCarthy narrates atrocity and geology in the same impassive register, and the desert regards both with equal indifference.
