Highland Beach, Maryland, was founded late in the nineteenth century by affluent Black families from Washington and Baltimore seeking a summer retreat on the Chesapeake Bay, and it counted Alex Haley and Arthur Ashe among later residents. Hostin sets her third novel there, continuing the series’ habit of using a real community’s history to frame a family story about legacy, property and the pull of the places that formed us. Threads carried through the earlier books come to a head.
