So the bottleneck must never sit idle (not through lunch breaks, not waiting for parts), must never process defective parts (put quality inspection before it, not after), and must never work on things you don’t currently need. The true cost of a bottleneck hour is not the machine’s standard rate but the entire plant’s operating expense divided by the bottleneck’s hours, an enormous figure that reframes every decision about it.

If you only need the ideas, you have them. But The Goal is unusual in that the novel format is doing real work: watching Alex reason his way from crisis to clarity, hit dead ends, and rebuild his understanding is what makes the principles stick and teaches you to think the way the method requires, which a bullet list cannot. Read the full book if you work in or manage any kind of operation, if you’re studying business, or if you simply want one of the most effective pieces of teaching-through-story ever written.
