Author
Ursula K. Le Guin
Novelist & Essayist
Ursula K. Le Guin was an American author who used science fiction and fantasy as instruments for thinking, building societies that differ from ours in one deliberate respect and then following the consequences honestly. The Left Hand of Darkness removed fixed gender, The Dispossessed took anarchism seriously, and the Earthsea books gave fantasy a quieter moral register. She also wrote essays defending genre fiction against critics who had not read it.
