Doris Lessing was a British novelist who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2007, having grown up in colonial Rhodesia and drawn on it for her early fiction. The Golden Notebook, published in 1962, broke its own narrative into separate coloured notebooks to show a woman trying and failing to keep the parts of her life apart, and it became a founding text for a generation of readers she did not always want to speak for.
