In Search of Lost Time

Marcel Proust · 2003

Proust's seven-volume novel of memory, childhood and high society in France, in a Modern Library edition.

Marcel Proust began shaping the work in 1909 and kept revising it until his final illness in 1922. It appeared in France between 1913 and 1927, and the last three volumes were still in draft at his death, so his brother Robert oversaw their publication. The work is known for its length and its theme of involuntary memory. Jean-Philippe Blondel has read it three times, at 19, 30 and 50, and says the fear of its length is unfounded.

Jean-Philippe Blondel

French Novelist and English Teacher

In Search of Lost Time. The reasons why people are afraid of it (the number of volumes, the length of the sentences) are unfounded. Nobody has ever re-created the world as he did. Entering his work is just like stepping into the most beautiful monument you have ever seen.
