Wolf Solent
A sensitive man returns to Dorset and his father's scandalous past, torn between two women.
John Cowper Powys’s 1929 novel follows Wolf Solent, a thirty-five-year-old teacher who leaves London for the Dorset town of his childhood to work for a local squire. There he is torn between two women, Gerda and Christie, and haunted by his dead father’s scandal. Powys fills the book with Wolf’s intense inner life and the Dorset countryside.

There’s another marvellous chapter where Wolf and Gerda court each other with zeal and only the reader can hear how poorly they understand each other. This manic perspective feels at odds with all the pastoral indulgences, but it makes the book a unique record of the literary moment of the late 20s.
