White Rage
The Unspoken Truth of Our Racial Divide
A historian traces the backlash against Black progress in America, from the Civil War to the protests in Ferguson.
When Ferguson, Missouri, erupted in August 2014 and commentators described the anger of African Americans as black rage, historian Carol Anderson wrote a Washington Post op-ed arguing that what was really at work was white rage. This 2016 book grew out of that piece. Running from the Civil War to the present, it chronicles the forces that have pushed back against Black progress in America. It won the National Book Critics Circle Award for Criticism and became a New York Times bestseller.

Anderson's book compellingly recenters America's racial narrative on the propulsive power of white fury. The sentiments she traces, and the force they carry, don't just explain our political past; they also reveal our political present.
