The Waters
A healer, her granddaughter and a Michigan swamp, with a suspicious town at the edge of it.
On an island in a Michigan swamp, a healer known locally as a witch raises her granddaughter among plants, remedies and the suspicion of the town nearby. Campbell writes rural Michigan with no sentimentality about it, and the novel is as interested in what the community fears as in what the women actually do.
