The Heart Goes Last
A couple trade their freedom for security in a town where every second month is spent inside its prison, by design.
Stan and Charmaine are living in their car after the economy collapses when they sign up for Consilience, a gated town where residents spend alternate months in comfortable homes and in its prison. Atwood pushes the arrangement to its logical end, through sexbots, organ harvesting and a brisk trade in obedience. It is her funniest late novel and among her bleakest.
