Nick Carraway rents a cottage next to a man who throws enormous parties for people who do not know him, in pursuit of a woman across the bay who married someone else. Fitzgerald published it in 1925 to modest sales and died believing it had failed. It is now the standard American novel about money, self-invention and the gap between the two.
