The Gormenghast Novels
Titus Groan, Gormenghast, Titus Alone
Mervyn Peake’s three novels collected in one volume. Titus Groan and Gormenghast take place inside a castle so vast and so bound by ritual that nobody remembers what the rituals are for, and follow the young earl Titus and the kitchen boy Steerpike, who climbs through the hierarchy by murder. Titus Alone sends Titus out into a stranger world. Not fantasy in the Tolkien sense, and closer to Dickens with the plot removed.

It’s so Gothic – it’s like marzipan, it’s so rich, so overly described and wonderful. He goes into excessive but delightful detail, and all of the characters are grotesques in the best possible way. It’s like Peake has taken Dickens’ tendencies towards grotesquery, and just pushed that to eleven. I thoroughly enjoyed it because of the setting, the mood. The characters are memorable and the language is delightful.
