The Future of Islam in the Middle East

Mahmud A. Faksh

A 1997 verdict, ignored at the time, that Islamic fundamentalism could protest but could never govern.

Faksh examines Islamic fundamentalism in Egypt, Algeria and Saudi Arabia and concludes that it has no future as a governing project. His case is that the movements offer an idiom of protest rather than a programme, and cannot survive contact with the administrative demands of a modern state. Published in 1997 and largely overlooked, the argument reads better now than most of the commentary that drowned it out.

Faksh looks at the future of Islamic fundamentalism in Egypt, Algeria and Saudi Arabia and concludes that it has no future. Faksh offers a refreshing and powerful analysis of the vacuous nature of Islamic fundamentalism. He is very far sighted but his book is largely neglected. I think it deserves to be read and re-read.
