Marian is engaged, employed and outwardly content when food begins refusing her: first meat, then eggs, then very nearly everything. Atwood’s first novel, published in 1969, treats that refusal as the one honest response available to a woman being steadily consumed by the arrangements around her. It is comic for most of its length and then abruptly is not.
