J.D. Vance grew up between Middletown, Ohio and the Kentucky hills, raised largely by grandparents amid addiction, poverty and instability, and went on to Yale Law School. His memoir is an attempt to explain that passage and the culture he came from, and it became one of the most argued-over books of its decade, read by some as sociology and by others as a family story that resists it. Eric Schmidt called it one of the better memoirs he had read in a decade.
