Valerie Gillis, forty-two and an experienced hiker, vanishes on the Appalachian Trail two hundred miles from the end. Gaige tells the search from several sides — the missing woman, the game warden leading the effort, an elderly woman following it from afar — and is as interested in what drives a person into the woods as in whether she is found.
