Voldemort is back, but the Ministry of Magic insists otherwise, installing the saccharine and sadistic Dolores Umbridge at Hogwarts to keep the story contained. Cut off and angry, Harry teaches his classmates defensive magic in secret while dreams pull him toward a locked door deep inside the Ministry. The longest book in the series is a study of institutional denial and teenage fury, building to a battle that costs Harry one of the few family figures he has left.

It’s all about the War on Terror as far as I’m concerned. I read this book shortly before I became director of Liberty and you might say I’m someone who’s a little unwell and thinks the TV is talking to me, but to me it’s a thinly veiled metaphor for the War on Terror. The Ministry of Magic is raining down in various draconian ways in response to a very serious threat from the dark Lord Voldemort.
