Oates takes Norma Jeane Baker from the foster homes through the studio system to her death at thirty-six, and calls it a novel rather than a biography so she can write from inside a mind nobody recorded. It runs to more than seven hundred pages, invents freely, and was a National Book Award finalist. The 2022 film adaptation drew much of its criticism from choices the book makes deliberately.
