Atheists
The Origin of the Species
A history of European atheism that treats it as an argument about authority as much as about God.
Nick Spencer’s history of atheism in Europe from the Reformation to the present. Spencer, a researcher at the Christian think tank Theos, argues that atheism has been shaped as much by disputes over political and religious authority as by arguments about whether God exists. He traces the many different kinds of unbelief that have emerged along the way.
