Pablo Neruda

Poet & Diplomat

Pablo Neruda was a Chilean poet and diplomat who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1971, and whose range ran from the early love poems that made him famous at nineteen to the political verse of Canto General and the odes to ordinary things: a tomato, socks, a dictionary. He served as consul and senator, went into hiding for his politics, and remained the poet most Latin American readers can quote from memory.
