Cause for Alarm
An unemployed engineer takes a job in Milan in 1937 and lands between competing intelligence services. Ambler made thrillers modern by making his heroes ordinary.
An unemployed English engineer takes a job in Milan in 1937 and finds himself between competing intelligence services, entirely out of his depth. Ambler made the thriller modern by refusing to give his heroes any particular competence, and the approaching war casts a shadow over everything, including the ordinary business decisions that started it.

Are all his books so good? So far yes. With very simple means he redefines what it means to be a good writer of thrillers. Very English, written and set in Italy 1937, with a foolish Englishman who could be out of a Hitchcock movie.
