Mahatma Gandhi
Indian Independence Leader
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (1869 to 1948) was an Indian lawyer and anti-colonial nationalist who led the campaign for independence from British rule through nonviolent resistance, and whose methods went on to shape civil rights movements worldwide. He was a serious reader who credited books with changing how he lived: he gave one of them, John Ruskin’s Unto This Last, an entire chapter of his autobiography, and thought enough of it to translate it into Gujarati himself.
