Christakis argues evolution wired us for cooperation and friendship, not just tribalism and conflict.
Nicholas Christakis argues that natural selection did not only equip us to compete. Drawing on genetics, shipwreck survivor communities and studies of societies worldwide, he identifies a shared “social suite” — friendship, cooperation, mild hierarchy, love — that keeps reappearing wherever humans build a society. His conclusion is optimistic: tribalism is real, but so is the wiring that pulls against it. Eric Schmidt endorsed it, writing that tribalism is all around us but does not have to be.
