Bram Stoker’s 1897 Gothic novel is told through letters, diary entries and newspaper clippings. It opens with the English solicitor Jonathan Harker on a business trip to the Transylvanian castle of Count Dracula, who reveals himself as a vampire and moves to England, where he preys on the seaside town of Whitby. Harker joins a group led by Abraham Van Helsing to hunt him down. Stoker drew on folklore and history and filled more than a hundred pages with notes.

We all know this macabre Victorian novel loaded with sexual innuendo, suspense, Christian paranoia, blood, mystery, and even a zoophagous madman. What is there not to like? It is badly written, but the story fascinates me to this day.
