Casting with a Fragile Thread

A Story of Sisters and Africa

Wendy Kann

A sister's death in Zambia sends the author back through a Rhodesian childhood she had put a continent between herself and.

Kann grew up white in colonial Rhodesia, left for America, and was called back by the news that her sister had died in a car accident in Zambia. The book moves between the return and the childhood: a mother who was bipolar and drinking, a father dead young, three sisters raised by a stepmother in a country that was ceasing to exist. The prose is lyric and controlled, and the landscape is never scenery.
