Love, Anger, Madness

A Haitian Triptych

Marie Vieux-Chauvet · 1968

Three linked novellas of life under the Duvalier dictatorship, withdrawn before publication because printing them would have endangered the author's family.

Three linked novellas set under the Duvalier dictatorship: a woman recording her town’s cruelties in a journal, a mother trading her body to protect her family, and a group of poets writing in hiding. Vieux-Chauvet withdrew the book before publication because releasing it would have endangered her relatives in Haiti, and went into exile in the United States.
