Yusuf al-Qaradawi
Islamic scholar and jurist (1926–2022)
Yusuf al-Qaradawi was an Egyptian-born scholar based in Doha and chairman of the International Union of Muslim Scholars. He reached an audience most jurists never do: his Al Jazeera programme al-Sharīʿa wa al-Ḥayāh was estimated at forty to sixty million viewers, and he was the chief religious scholar behind IslamOnline.
He wrote prolifically on Islamic law for ordinary readers rather than specialists. The Lawful and the Prohibited in Islam is his most widely circulated work, a practical guide to what is permitted and forbidden in daily life. He died in 2022.
