William Faulkner was an American novelist who set most of his work in the invented Yoknapatawpha County, Mississippi, and who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1949. He wrote long sentences that withhold their subject, shifted narrators without warning, and let time fold back on itself, all of it in service of a South that could not stop rehearsing its own past. The Sound and the Fury and Light in August are where most readers begin.
