Psychologist and writer who grew up in foster homes in California, worked as a busboy and supermarket bagger, and joined the Air Force at seventeen, serving in Europe and the Middle East. He took a psychology degree at Yale on the G.I. Bill and a doctorate at Cambridge as a Gates Scholar, and is now a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute. He coined the term luxury beliefs, for ideas that confer status on the affluent while costing the poor.
