Portrait of Miyamoto Musashi

Miyamoto Musashi

Swordsman, Strategist and Writer

Miyamoto Musashi was a Japanese swordsman, strategist and artist who fought some sixty duels without losing and founded the Niten Ichi-ryu style, which uses two swords at once. In his last years he withdrew to a cave and wrote The Book of Five Rings, a short treatise on combat that reads as much about attention and timing as about swords, which is why it keeps being handed to people who will never hold one. He was also an accomplished ink painter and calligrapher.
