Maya Angelou was an American memoirist, poet and civil rights activist who published seven autobiographies, beginning with I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, which described a Black girlhood in the American South plainly and without apology. She worked alongside Martin Luther King Jr and Malcolm X, recited On the Pulse of Morning at Bill Clinton’s inauguration, and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom. She died in 2014.
