Kurt Cobain wrote and fronted Nirvana, whose 1991 album Nevermind moved a whole underground into the mainstream and left him badly uncomfortable there. He died in 1994, aged twenty-seven.
He was a compulsive writer away from songs: notebooks of lyrics in progress, unsent letters, lists and drawings, kept throughout the band’s rise. Journals reproduces those pages in facsimile, and it remains the closest thing to hearing him think rather than perform.
