Kaye Gibbons is an American novelist whose first book, Ellen Foster, was written in her twenties and told in the voice of an eleven year old girl surviving a violent home in rural North Carolina. It won the Sue Kaufman Prize for First Fiction and a citation from the Ernest Hemingway Foundation. A Virtuous Woman followed. Gibbons writes short, plain-spoken novels about Southern women whose circumstances are far harder than their voices let on.
