Kate Summerscale

Writer and Journalist

Kate Summerscale writes narrative history out of archives most people would find unreadable: inquest papers, asylum notes, trial transcripts. The Suspicions of Mr Whicher reconstructed a country-house murder of 1860 and the detective who could not close it, and won the Samuel Johnson Prize in 2008. The Queen of Whale Cay, The Wicked Boy and The Haunting of Alma Fielding work the same seam. The research is invisible in the prose, which is the point.
