Kahlil Gibran was a Lebanese-American poet, essayist and painter whose book The Prophet, published in 1923, has never gone out of print and has been translated into more than a hundred languages. Written as a series of short addresses on marriage, children, work and death, it sits somewhere between poetry and scripture, which is why it turns up at weddings and funerals far more often than in literature syllabuses.
