John Steinbeck was an American novelist who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1962. The Grapes of Wrath followed a family driven off their Oklahoma land during the Depression and provoked enough anger to be banned and burned in some of the places it described. East of Eden, which he considered his major work, retells Cain and Abel in the Salinas Valley where he grew up. The Log from the Sea of Cortez records a marine collecting voyage with his friend Ed Ricketts.
