Charles Dickens was an English novelist and journalist, widely regarded as the greatest of the Victorian era. He created some of the most durable characters in English literature and published most of his novels in serial instalments, which shaped both their cliffhangers and their enormous popular readership. Great Expectations and A Tale of Two Cities remain among the most widely read. He campaigned throughout his life on poverty, education and the treatment of children.
