Brian Doyle

Essayist and Novelist

Brian Doyle was an American essayist and novelist who edited Portland Magazine at the University of Portland for more than two decades. He wrote with unusual attention to small things, hummingbirds, hearts, the ordinary decency of strangers, in the long looping sentences that became his signature. He received the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Literature and three Pushcart Prizes. He died in 2017, and collections of his essays have continued to appear since.
