Angela Davis

Philosopher, author and abolitionist

Angela Y. Davis became internationally known in 1970 when she was placed on the FBI’s most-wanted list and later acquitted of all charges after a trial that drew a global campaign. She has spent the decades since as a professor and writer, and is now distinguished professor emerita at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Her work argues that prisons are not a solution to social problems but a way of disappearing them, and Women, Race & Class remains a foundational text on how race, gender and labour intersect. She writes as an organiser rather than an observer, which is what gives the books their urgency.
