Reynolds is best known for hard science fiction at enormous scale, and this collection shows the shorter form suits him. The title story concerns an artist whose work grows steadily simpler until it resolves into a single colour, and the explanation turns on memory and what a mind is for. Several of the others circle the same question from different angles.
