June is a failed white novelist who watches her far more successful Chinese American friend choke to death, takes the unpublished manuscript from her flat, and publishes it as her own under a deliberately ambiguous pen name. Kuang narrates entirely from inside June’s self-justification, which is what makes it work. A satire of publishing, diversity as marketing, and online pile-ons, told by someone certain she is the victim.
