The Elite Charade of Changing the World
Giridharadas argues that elite philanthropy and "changing the world" often protect the systems that made them rich.
Anand Giridharadas, a journalist and former New York Times columnist, argues in this 2018 book that members of the global elite, though sometimes engaged in philanthropy, use their wealth and influence to preserve systems that concentrate wealth at the top. It was a New York Times bestseller. Economist Joseph Stiglitz called it a devastating portrait of a whole class. Jenny Offill bought it at an airport and says Giridharadas can turn the analysis of complicated systems into a page-turner.
