Layli Long Soldier · 2017

Poems by an Oglala Lakota writer that answer the 2009 United States apology to Native peoples.

Layli Long Soldier wrote these poems in response to the 2009 Congressional apology to Native peoples. She studied the apologies other governments have made, and the longest poem recounts the hanging of 38 Dakota warriors in 1862. Graywolf Press published the collection in 2017, and it won the National Book Critics Circle Award for Poetry and the PEN/Jean Stein Book Award. Louise Erdrich calls it a book to carry through your day.
