What About Me?
What a market society does to identity, argued by a clinician who sees the results in his consulting room.
Verhaeghe is a clinical psychoanalyst, and his subject is what a market society does to the person inside it. When worth is measured by output and everyone is told they are an enterprise, the result is not liberated individuals but anxiety, loneliness and shame presented as personal failure. He argues identity is made socially, so changing the economy changes the self. A useful companion to the political arguments rather than a repeat of them.
