Jean Stein assembles five Los Angeles families, the Dohenys, the Warners, the Garlands and her own among them, entirely from the voices of people who were there. It is oral history with the interviewer removed, the method she used in Edie, and the accumulation is what does the work: money arriving, houses built, children ruined. Stein died the year after publication.
