Chen-Pang Yeang traces how scientists and engineers between 1900 and 1955 turned unwanted sound and electrical disturbance from something to be eliminated into a measurable quantity, and eventually into the foundation of communication theory. A serious history of science, and good on the point where physics and engineering stopped being separate problems.
