Lisa Taddeo spent eight years reporting on the desire of three American women: a teenager groomed by her teacher, a wife whose husband will not touch her, and a restaurant owner whose open marriage is watched by her whole town. She moved to their towns, sat in their kitchens, and reconstructed their inner lives at a level of detail closer to the novel than to journalism. The book was a phenomenon on publication and remains divisive, largely because it refuses to draw a lesson from any of them.
